A dominant India registered their biggest victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in six years when they coasted to a 5-1 win in a round-robin league match of the 25th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, here today.
This was India’s biggest win since their 7-4 triumph against Pakistan in the 2010 Commonwealth Games at New Delhi.
Playing their best game of the tournament, Manpreet Singh opened the scoring for India in the fourth minute but Pakistan equalised in the seventh through captain Muhammad Irfan.
But thereafter it was all India as the Sardar Singh-led side controlled the proceedings with SV Sunil scoring two opportunistic field goals in the 10th and 41st minutes.
Talwinder Singh then capitalised on a rebound to score India’s fourth goal in the 50th minute before Rupinder Pal Singh converted a penalty corner in the 54th minute.
India’s victory would have been bigger had Rupinder converted a penalty stroke in the 55th minute and an deflection into the net by Ramandeep Singh in the 69th was not disallowed after the umpire initially blew for a goal.
The victory took India to the second spot in the round-robin league standings with nine points from four outings. The table is being led by world champions Australia on 12 points from four straight wins.
Australia took one step into the final when they prevailed 1-0 over Oceania rivals and defending champions New Zealand, who now have eight points from five matches.
The all-important goals for Australia was scored by captain Jamie Dwyer, who capitalised on a rebound to shoot into the open goal with the goalkeeper at his mercy.
Later in the day, in an exhibition of the sub-continental style of hockey, India lifted their game by leaps and bounds to dominate the match, forcing Pakistan to crowd their territory in the second half to deny Sardar’s men more goals.PTI

Thirteen persons, including members of the managing commitee of the Puttingal Devi Temple, were today arrested in connection with the fireworks mishap there in which 110 people have died, police said.
The arrested included seven members of the managing committee and six workers of the two contractors, who carried out the fireworks display on the final day of the seven-day long festival early Sunday.
The arrests were made by the police after day-long questioning, sources said.
In a dramatic move, the temple trust’s President Jayalal, Secretary J Krishnankutty and members Shivaprasad, Surendran Pillai, Ravindran Pillai had surrendered before the Crime Branch police in the wee hours today.
Two other managing committee members Srendranathan Pillai and Murugesan were picked by police here this morning.
Other six workers of the two contractors who carried out the fireworks disply were also picked by police after the accident.
A Crime Branch probe into the fire tragedy is currently underway.
The ghastly mishap at the 100-year-old temple at nearby Parvavoor occurred when sparks from fireworks fell on a storehouse stocked with crackers, triggering powerful explosions.
Former India skipper Kapil Dev today sought to downplay the oft-repeated comparison between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli saying it’s not proper to compare the two.
“Where is the need for such a comparison? Sachin on his own is a legend. Virat Kohli is playing at an early stage. So I think it is not right to compare the two players,” Kapil said at an event organised by TMT bar maker SRMB here.
Responding to queries, Kapil said it should be left to the five selectors to choose the next captain.
On whether skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni should quit as captain as India failed to make it to the World T20 finals, Kapil said Dhoni has done India proud a number of times.
“When the selectors feel that there is a need for a change, they will make the change. It is better to leave it to them,” Kapil said.
On India’s performance at the T20 World Cup, he said “It was fabulous. Very good. On that given day, the rivals outplayed us.”
“If the other team plays better, you must respect that.
Every time India lose, I feel bad. But at the end of the day, it is cricket,” he said.
Asked whether the shortest version of the game is spoiling cricket, he said, “Why such a question? Have you ever seen so many sixes and chasing moments? So long as the cricketing world is there, I am for it.PTI
The Bombay High Court has declined to quash an FIR registered against an editor of a software company website for allegedly using abusive language against a female reporter on the ground that the complaint discloses commission of cognisable offence.
“Prima facie, we find that the complaint discloses commission of a cognisable offence under Section 509 of IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). The offence is cognisable and bailable,” noted a bench of Justices Naresh Patil and Justice A M Badar recently.
“At this stage, it is not appropriate to observe anything more as investigation is in progress. We expect the investigating agency to probe the matter fairly and complete investigation within three weeks from today,” said the bench while rejecting the editor’s plea to quash the FIR.
During July 20-24, 2015, the complainant had gone with the petitioner and other officers of her company to a hotel for a conference. According to the complaint, the editor allegedly used abusive language during interactions while generally talking to her in front of others.
The complainant alleged those words were used knowingly and with an intention to insult her and she felt ashamed on hearing those utterances.
It was further alleged that on July 22, 2015, a party was hosted, but the complainant, due to her commitments, could not attend it. The complainant was told the petitioner (editor) was not happy as she did not attend the party.
According to the complainant, on July 29, 2015, she received two e-mails from the petitioner, which were abusive in nature. She complained of the same to the HR Head who assured that the CEO was personally looking into the matter.
She further alleged after her complaint to HR, the petitioner started behaving badly with her and and she was allegedly asked to withdraw the complaint and was mentally harassed for not doing so.
On noticing that the management was not taking any step to solve the matter, the complainant said she was constrained to approach the National Commission for Women in New Delhi. The Commission directed her to approach the Amboli Police Station in Mumbai.
The complainant then registered an FIR under Section 509 of IPC and relevant section of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.PTI
Popular Bollywood songs would not be heard in the ongoing T-20 cricket league, with the Delhi High Court restraining BCCI and seven IPL teams from playing them without the permission of the members of a singers’ association.
The Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA), a body registered as the first copyright society, has moved the high court seeking an injunction against the IPL teams, excluding Delhi Daredevils, by asserting that playing of songs without the nod of members of the body amounts to infringement of “performer’s rights”.
The court asked event management firm – DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd – and its Manager of Operations to refrain from playing the songs till April 19, the next date of hearing, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would also response to the notice.
“Till the next date, defendants shall remain restrained from in any manner communicating to the public (via radio, TV, mobile phones or any other medium) ISRA’s repertoire, during IPL matches, comprising of performances of all its members (live or recorded), without obtaining a Performer’s Rights Clearance Certificate from ISRA, or doing any other act infringing the members performers’ rights or doing any act violating the members Right to Receive Royalty,” Justice Vipin Sanghi said.
The lawsuit filed by advocate Pravin Anand on behalf of ISRA, whose members include Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Asha Bhosle and Kailash Kher, alleged that till date, neither the IPL teams nor the event management firm has paid royalty for the previous years and not obtained permission from it for playing of songs of its members in this year’s IPL matches.
The IPL teams which have to reply to ISRA’s allegations are Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, King’s XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions.PTI
As jewellers strike continues against excise duty imposition, a lot of work in the city has been shifted underground to meet the lucrative wedding season demand.
According to a jeweller, who requested anonymity, there is no dearth of work for workers and designers, who are busy making ornaments as demand peaks ahead of the wedding mahurat Sawas this month.
As per the Hindu tradition, Sawas is considered auspicious and thousands tie the knot that day. The result: Both demand and price of jewellery are skyrocketing, though officially, the strike continues for over a month now.
“The gold is being sold in the market without the customs duty. The shutters are down, but the workers and artisans at jewellery manufacturing units inside deep streets are working day and night to make up for the wedding demand,” Manish Agrawal, a city-based expert said.
Up to 95 per cent of the jewellery trade across the district has shifted base.
Mooji Nuwal, spokesperson of the Sarraf Association of Bundi said: “The gold jewellery trade and designing work is closed due to the strike, but (only) in small towns and villages, it is going underground,” said Nuwal.
Noratmal Agrawal, President of Bundi Sarraf Bazaar, echoed his point. “The market is totally closed, but smaller orders are being made up with the gold stocked,” Agrawal added.
In the meantime, the government has formed a sub-committee under former Chief Economic Advisor Ashok Lahiri to study the matter and come up with suggestions.
When it comes to buying gold, right connections matter, as Ram Pratap whose son is set to be married on April 16 says it is the contacts with jewellers that can fetch you a good bargain.
Since there is not enough gold in the market for regular transactions, much of the marriage requirement is being met through bullion stocked up for the purpose.
“The gold is nowhere in the market for sale and purchase.
So, we are using the gold in stock for designing wedding jewellery,” said another trader who operates in Kota and Bundi districts.
Supporting the government’s decision to impose excise duty on jewellery trade, another trader of Kota Jitesh Soni said if it withdraws the duty under pressure, it would be a defeat for the Centre.
Traders added that in the absence of current market price, they are making jewellery at Rs 28,500 per 10 grams.
The point is the whole issue is refusing to die down as there are signs of more trouble brewing for the government.
The matter escalated after nearly 1,100 gold jewellery traders in Kota gave up their BJP membership and resigned en masse.PTI
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan says it’s a great honour for him to introduce Britain’s Royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton.
They are arriving on their first visit to India on Sunday, April 10.
They Royal couple will be given a starry reception on their arrival in the city which will be attended by film stars including SRK, Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, according to the British High Commission.
“There will be lot of actors and friends so it will be fun. I think it’s a big honour to be there and introduce them and be nice.
“We will decide if they want to see the film (‘Fan’) or not. In England they still watch our films. So hopefully let’s see,” Shah Rukh, 50, told PTI when asked if he is planning a special screening of “Fan” for the Royal couple.
During the interview, the public relations team of “Fan” said, we suggested him (Shah Rukh) to do ‘dubsmash’ with them (on ‘Jabra’ Fan).
To which the “Happy New Year” star replied, “They will never allow it.”
“I am told there is a decor and I said OK tell me what to do. It shouldn’t be like they don’t let my kids to study in London,” the “Dilwale” actor joked.
Apart from introducing the Royal couple, another important task Shah Rukh has tomorrow, is to support his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, who have a match against Delhi Daredevils.
“I have my match (tomorrow). I want to watch it (and) I want to go to Kolkata. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that it is important that I introduce Prince Williams and his wife Kate. I just introduce them. I am not performing for them. Nobody is performing,” the King Khan added.
Directed by Maneesh Sharma, “Fan” starring SRK in double role and Walusha De Sousa is slated to release on April 15.PTI
