Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan believes filmmakers of the past made movies with certain honesty to their craft, something which is missing in the cinema today.

Jaya says people in her era, and even before, were guided by a true passion for cinema to tell the stories that were essential.

“I think people at that time, writers, thinkers, artistes of different kinds, musicians, or anybody who had some kind of sensitivity in them, made cinema that they thought should be made.

“Of course, it had to talk about the time they were living in, or had lived with. Unfortunately, or fortunately, they didn’t talk about what is going to happen to cinema (in the future),” she said.

According to the actress, their strive for creativity resulted in good cinema, unlike the filmmakers of today, who chase money.

“Most importantly they were all creative people and not businessmen. I think that is why they could make the kind of cinema they did at that time which is relevant even today.”

She was speaking at a special panel discussion on the cinema of iconic filmmaker Bimal Roy, at the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star, last evening.

The “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” actress said filmmaking today has undergone a huge change, with no space for subtlety or even shame.

“Unfortunately, the demand from a filmmaker is very different today than it was at that time. Filmmakers at that 搬瓦工 time didn’t do business, they created art. Today it is business, all about numbers. Everything is thrown at your face.

Jaya said if directors focus more on the content, their films will be recognised.

“But, if a filmmaker wants to tell a story, and decides to take actors, even who are not known, within a certain budget, it will get the recognition, the results.

Bollywood actor John Abraham said he was initially apprehensive to ask his co-star Sonakshi Sinha to do action sequences in their upcoming film “Force 2”.

In the second installment of “Force”, an action drama, John and Sonakshi will be seen doing some heavy duty daredevil scenes.

The song “Lal Rang” was launched in presence of lead actors John, Sonakshi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, director Abhinay Deo, producer Vipul Shah and Ajit Andhare of Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.

John said it was Abhinay’s idea to give the actor’s voice-over for the anthem song of “Force 2”.

“Lal Rang” salutes India’s unsung martyrs and for the first time ever John has lent his voice to a track.

“I had tears in my eyes while singing it. I also had anger while doing the song. It was a voice over but the experience was fantastic,” John said.

The film, a sequel to the 2011 hit “Force”, is due to release on November 18.

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt says she had a good experience playing a DJ in Karan Johar’s upcoming film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”.

Ranveer, who will next be seen in Aditya Chopra’s directorial venture “Befikre,” whose trailer was launched here at the Eiffel Tower, says he considers himself fortunate to get some great opportunities, which contribute in his growth.

“I used to be a very different kind of actor, I am not that actor anymore and not that person anymore. I have changed a lot as an actor and as a person. I have grown for good.

“I am not the Ranveer of ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ or ‘Lootera’. I find myself learning something new with every film. I am blessed that every new film has something new for me to learn from.”

Ranveer received a lot of praise for filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane’s “Lootera” and the actor says that recognition made him more confident about his abilities.

“When you get validation, which for me started when I got critical acclaim for ‘Lootera’, it makes you gain a little bit of self confidence in your own abilities and then you can play with your craft.” .

Actor Vir Das is all praise for the action sequences in Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film “Shivaay”.

“I think he (Ajay) has been able to pull off the story very well. I think nobody is able to pull off action the way Ajay has done in ‘Shivaay’. It will be a visual treat for everyone,” Vir told PTI.
