The National Green Tribunal has directed a five-star hotel here to submit details of its water consumption after a plea alleged that the hotel was illegally extracting ground water and causing environmental degradation.
A bench headed by Justice U D Salvi directed Hotel Jaypee Vasant to inform the tribunal about the supply of water it received through tankers between August, 2015 to January, 2016 and also submit all bills in this regard.
“We direct the Respondent No 1 (Hotel Jaypee Vasant) to make a candid statement as to the supply of water through tankers between the period of August, 2015 to January, 2016 and place all such bills for the said period before us on the next date,” the bench said while posting the matter for next hearing on July 15.
During the hearing, Delhi Jal Board told the bench that the hotel has two sanctioned water lines and the average consumption for 26 days is 139 kilo litres that is 5.3 litres per day through one of the water lines. The consumption from the other water line is almost negligible, he said.
The counsel appearing for the hotel informed the bench that the water requirements are met either by Delhi Jal Board or water tankers.
The tribunal had last year issued notices to three five-star hotels, Central Ground Water Authority, Delhi Jal Board, New Delhi Municipal Council, Central Pollution Control Board.
The directions came while hearing a plea filed by Delhi resident Shailesh Singh seeking directions to immediately stop withdrawal of ground water without permission.
Singh had alleged that these five-star hotels were using “several lakh litres” of ground water and the sources of water are not visible in their premises.
The plea had alleged that according to Delhi Pollution Control Committee, one of the hotels was extracting 2,22,600 litres of water from supply and is having two bore-wells to extract ground water.
Earlier, the tribunal had imposed a fine of Rs 7.5 lakh on one of the hotels after it found “unsatisfactory” rain water harvesting systems in their premises.PTI

“The law and order situation is deteriorating in Delhi every day. Delhi Police comes under the Prime Minister. Either he should do something or Delhi Police should be handed over to the Delhi government,” he had said after meeting Meenakshi’s family members.

Mumbai Police had registered a non-cognisable offence on Kumar’s complaint. However, the allegations were reportedly described by the police as “untrue”.
Kumar had described Deka as a “strong BJP supporter” in a tweet after the incident.PTI
China’s sporting fraternity today paid rich tributes to Muhammad Ali, the heavyweight boxing legend and civil rights champion who passed away in the United States after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Ali, the world’s most-loved and known sporting hero, visited China in 1979 and then again in 1985. He was greeted with unbound love wherever he went.
During his 1979 China visit, Ali was greeted by then Chinese vice-premier Deng Xiaoping, who said to him: “You have deep feelings toward China. Very welcome to China and have a look around.”
“Boxing can also be a bridge which enhances mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese and American people,” Deng had said.
Ali’s motto – “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” – is well-known in China and he was hailed as a beacon to Chinese youth chasing their sporting dreams.
“He is an icon and a great man,” said China’s first-ever WBC champion Xiong Chaozhong. “He taught us how to fight, how to overcome hardships.”
Xiong recalled a meeting with Ali’s wife, Lonnie.
“Ali’s wife came to see me in a press conference after I won the WBC title on November 24, 2012, telling me that Mr Ali wanted me to be his student because he had promised Deng Xiaoping that he would teach China’s first professional champion if there would be one,” Xiong told state-run Xinhua news agency.
China’s two-time Olympic champion boxer Zou Shiming tearfully mourned the passing of Ali, vowing to win a professional title to honour the legendary boxer.
“I planned to go visit my idol Mr Muhammad Ali after winning a professional bout. But now, I can only pray he is at peace in heaven, and free from illness and pain,” the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion posted on his Weibo account.
In a tearful interview, Zou said: “I am deeply grieving over the passing of the legend Mr Ali, for whom I have great respect. He has been a great inspiration to me.”
Chinese boxer Yang Lianhui hailed Ali as one of the most transformative persons in history.
“Both Chinese boxing and world boxing benefitted from Muhammad Ali’s talents,” said Yang.

“The MIDC land scam is a serious matter and a fair and thorough investigation should be done,” he said.
Meanwhile, local builder Hemant Gavande, who first flagged the questionable land deal in Bhosari involving Khadse’s family, said he would keep pursuing the case.
It was Gavande who had first alleged that Khadse’s wife and his son-in-law purchased a three-acre piece of land belonging to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) at Bhosari near here at a throwaway price of Rs 3.75 crore from its original owner.
“Since he has resigned, I demand free and transparent probe in this matter…I will take the case to its logical conclusion,” Gavande said.
The senior BJP leader should “introspect about his misdeeds”, he said, welcoming Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s decision to appoint a retired High Court judge to probe the charges against Khadse.PTI
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap says even the slightest of alteration by the Censor Board for any film is no less than killing the creativity of the movie.
Kashyap’s troubles with the censor are well-known. The “Bombay Velvet” director has often been at loggerheads with the censor board right from his unreleased directorial debut film “Paanch” to “Black Friday” and “Ugly”.
Recently, there have been reports that his upcoming co-production “Udta Punjab”, which is based on the issue of substance abuse in Punjab, has failed to get censor board’s approval due to expletives and drug use.
Kashyap, however, had said the film has gone to the revising committee of the board like any other movie.
When asked if a film’s creativity is hampered when it is chopped at the censor board, the director told reporters, “When a filmmaker is ready with his film, he sends it to CBFC and according to him that is the film he wants. So even if it is altered a little bit it is Qatl-e-Aam of it.
“I don’t think any filmmaker makes a film and then says ‘cut and leave whatever you want’,” he added.
The filmmaker was speaking at the launch of “Qatl-e-Aam” song for his latest directorial “Raman Raghav 2.0” last evening.
The thriller stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a serial killer while Vicky Kaushal will play the role of a cop.
The “Dev D” helmer had previously said that he would not be satisfied “even with a single” cut for “Raman Raghav 2.0”.
When quizzed about the status of the film with regards to the censors, the director said, “The film will be shown as it is, intact. It has been cleared.”
“Raman Raghav 2.0” was showcased at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight section last month. The film is scheduled to release on June 24.PTI
In a first, a teenager, who allegedly ran over a 32-year-old marketing executive while driving his father’s Mercedes, will now face trial as an adult after the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) today said the offence allegedly committed by him was “heinous”.
The Presiding Officer of the JJB passed the order on the application of Delhi Police which had sought transfer of the case to trial court to try as adult the accused who turned major just four days after the April 4 incident.
It is the first of its kind case since the amendment in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which allowed the Board to transfer cases of heinous offences by children to Sessions court.
As per section 2(33) of the Act, “heinous offences” include the offences for which minimum punishment under IPC or any other law for the time being in force is imprisonment for seven years or more.
The police had on May 26 chargesheeted the juvenile in the JJB for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder entails a maximum of 10 years jail.
The JJB had reserved its order yesterday after hearing for over an hour arguments by Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava who had said the boy belongs to the age group of 16-18 years and this offence comes under definition of “heinous crimes” so his case should be transferred to the trial court.
The JJB today accepted the argument and allowed the plea of Delhi Police, Shrivastava said.
Initially, a case under IPC sections 304 A (causing death by rash or negligent act) was lodged against the teenager but later on he was booked for the alleged offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sent to the reform home.
Police had said in its charge sheet that the boy had fatally run over victim Siddharth Sharma with his father’s Mercedes when Sharma was trying to cross a road near Ludlow Castle School in north Delhi on April 4.
The final report was filed for alleged offences under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (driving on a public way so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) and 337 (causing hurt by an act which endangers human life) against him.
The Board had on April 26 granted bail to the youth who sought the relief to appear in entrance examinations.
Police had said that the car was being driven at a speed of at least 80 km per hour and Sharma was flung several feet into the air by the impact of the crash and landed around 15 metres away from where he stood.PTI
India and Qatar are expected to give a fresh push to their economic ties, particularly in the hydrocarbon sector, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds talks with this energy-rich country’s leadership tomorrow amid his keenness to attract investments for development back home.
Modi will also address top business leaders of Qatar, a country which is India’s largest supplier of LNG requirements, accounting for 65 per cent of its total imports last financial year.
During the interaction with the business community tomorrow morning, the Prime Minister is likely to seek greater investments, particularly in the infrastructure sector.
He will then hold detailed talks with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on a range of bilateral issues as well as regional and international matters of mutual concern.
The discussions are expected to focus on energy but various other aspects of the relationship will also come up during the talks, sources said here today.
Both sides are expected to sign a few agreements.
Qatar is an important trading partner for India in the Gulf region with bilateral trade in 2014-15 exceeding USD 15 billion. It is also one of India’s key sources of crude oil.
At present, a number of Indian companies are involved in construction activities related to the FIFA World Cup being hosted by Qatar in 2022.
Modi, who is visiting Doha from today for a two-day trip, will also address the Indian workers at a labour camp here.
The Indian diaspora of over 6,30,000 form the largest expatriate community in Qatar and constitutes a substantial percentage of the country’s population.
The Prime Minister has been focusing on improving ties with the Gulf region which is crucial for India’s energy security. He has already visited United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
It will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Qatar in the last eight years. The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had visited Doha in 2008.
“India’s historical and close relations with Qatar is marked by mutually beneficial commercial exchanges and extensive people-to-people contacts,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup had said a few days back while announcing the visit.
There has been regular exchange of high-level bilateral visits in the recent past. The Emir of Qatar had visited India in March 2015. Previously, the then Emir of Qatar had visited India in 1999, 2005 and 2012.
From here, the Prime Minister will travel to Switzerland on way to the US.PTI
